The Stapleton Singers community choir first began in April 2012, initially meeting on Tuesday evenings. It was set up by Anita Hudson, the Chief Executive at Mind in Haringey** at that time, and herself a great alto singer!
Anita wanted to start a group that local people could join in order to experience the fun and the benefits to wellbeing of group singing, and also to work towards giving fundraising performances in order to support the charity Mind in Haringey. The name Stapleton Singers derives from the address of Mind in Haringey, i.e. Stapleton Hall Road.
The setting up of this group happened to coincide with the closure of the nearby Poole’s Park Community Choir, which boosted the membership quite a bit!
We are a friendly, relaxed and still fairly small group, whose main purpose is just to sing together and have fun. We do also sometimes perform, which gives us something to aim towards, and has also enabled us to help raise money for Mind in Haringey.
The group is open to adults of all ages and ability from the local area, or from anywhere within reach! We currently have members from Stroud Green and the surrounding areas of Finsbury Park, Harringay, Crouch End, Holloway and Muswell Hill.
We continue to meet in the main hall at Mind, which provides us with a great space with good acoustics for singing. We all pitch in to help each session run smoothly, whether setting up chairs at the beginning, tidying away song-sheets at the end, or making sure everyone has signed in and paid up. Sometimes after our session we will go for a drink or two in the pub together – singing can be thirsty work!
We have had a number of different choir leaders since the beginning, including Jen, Alice, Ian Lloyd, and then Martina Schwarz between 2013 to 2015. See Martina’s website to find out about her current projects.
When Martina had to step out due to other demands on her time, the group was determined that the show should go on(!), and after a little searching we were very fortunate to make contact with Camilo Menjura, who is our current leader and has been with us since September 2015. Please see Camilo’s website for more information about his musical experience.
These include a couple of concerts for family and friends held at Mind, a performance at an Easter fair at St Mellitus Church in Tollington Park, and an appearance - along with another North London choir: The Angels of Kaos - at a Xmas fundraiser organised by Mind at The Old Dairy pub on Stroud Green Road.
A few of us also represented the Stapleton Singers, along with many other choirs, at the Sing for Water London 2015 concert, which was raising money for Water Aid. This youtube link does not do the sound justice but gives you an idea of the event!
